Too good to be true?
Last month, several Filipinos, most of them well-heeled, had fallen victim to an investment scam. The online pyramiding scheme lured investors with promises of very high returns, then the owner of the so-called trading firm cleared out the funds here and abroad and disappeared.
This is not the first instance that people have been talked into parting with their life savings or pensions by glib-tongued “investment counselors.” But in the recent scheme, the scam included a central business district front office and a slick website to boot.
The borderless economy and our growing dependence on wireless communications and commerce also bring forth the risk of white collar crime like identity theft and web-based confidence tricks.
To this we cannot overemphasize—and seasoned entrepreneurs will attest—that in any business endeavor “there ain’t no such thing as a sure thing.”
As my sidekick the Great Khan of Karamboola says: If it’s too good to be true, it isn’t. And if it’s too good to be legal, you can bet your last peso it’s not.
