Editor's Take
The End of the Tunnel?
After a week of turmoil triggered by the subprime loan crisis in the United States, markets worldwide are staging a comeback, thanks to billions of freshly-printed dollars pumped into the monetary system and an interest rate drop by the U.S. Federal Reserve Bank.
Business Mirror columnist John Mangun last week opined that the crisis in the American economy is not a housing problem; it is a credit problem. Simply put, you had lenders in the United States providing generous loans to people who could barely afford to pay for overpriced homes. That was like skating on thin ice, and now the whole thing has given way.
This complicates the Philippines’ economic development and the housing crunch in the United States is likely to raise concerns about a downturn in the world’s largest economy. This is no small item for the Philippines which counts on the US market to absorb 18 percents of exports.
There is much uncertainty at the moment. And we would be the last ones to say there is light at the end of the tunnel. For all we know it is the headlamp of an onrushing train.
