Success Story

No Run of the Mill Success

Dr. George S. K. Ty

Management is a practical discipline measured by financial returns and competitive position. But it is easy to forget that success in business ultimately comes from a commitment to personal values. When you look at Metrobank today, the tendency is to focus on its results, its size and its position. It is easy to overlook the elements that shaped its character.

When I was 19 years old, my father asked me to set up a flour mill. And over the next three years, I started the mill and worked my way up, learning about running a business along the way. I became the general manager of Wellington flour mills after a while, watching over equipment and raw materials worth $6 million, a lot of money at the time.

Want to End the Year with more Revenue? Here's How!
Coins
As salespeople we all start the year with lofty goals of increasing revenue.Yet, the reality is, many very talented professionals fall short of achieving their targets. December is not the time to start scrambling for business. Now is the time to think differently, try a fresh approach and hopefully meet, or exceed your goals.

The famous Albert Einstein quote that says,”lnsanity is doing the same thing over and over again and expecting different results,” certainly applies here. The same, tired techniques are comfortable yet they will always bring the same disappointing results. Are you ready to reach your goals? Great! Here’s what you need to do now:

Dig deeper into existing accounts. Hey, they already know you and love you.You have credibility and demonstrated competencies. Mine the gold that's already within reach.

Beyond the Call of Money

Illac DiazIn Philippines, entrepreneurship is oft sought as the road from poverty to a better quality of life. For those born into lives of privilege, entrepreneurship is a way of giving back and bridging the social gap.

It is a common opinion that businessmen are out to make money on investments at all cost. However, there is a growing community of entrepreneurs who have embraced and are facing the challenges of ‘social entrepreneurship’. Among them is Ilac Angelo Ancellotti Diaz of PierOne Seafarer's Dormitory, a business which earned him a slot in the Jaycees International (JCI) Ten Outstanding Persons of the World of 2006.

Diaz, a former commercial model and actor turned entrepreneur, provides safe and affordable temporary housing for the thousands of Filipino seamen in Manila applying or waiting for their crew assignments abroad.

Diaz is not a stranger to innovative projects. His previous business ideas that earned recognition at the Massachusetts Institute of Technology (MIT) in Boston include a coral regeneration project which uses a turbine powered by sea currents; and a low-cost, easily replicated cement peanut sheller. Diaz is better known for unique and hardy building designs for rural areas, constructed with packed soil and locally sourced materials.

Diaz sets a stirring example for others to follow. His endeavors show how entrepreneurs can approach business by successfully combining profitability with social development goals, otherwise known as the Double Bottom Line. Diaz not only teaches people how to fish for a living, he also teaches them how to swim especially in these interesting times.

As a rule, the role of the enterprise in an open market is to produce value for shareholders, employees, customers and the society as a whole. In order to thrive in a fiercely competitive environment, the challenge of creating meaningful jobs and profitable goods and services on a long-term basis is great.

Today’s entrepreneurs should look beyond economic sustainability. We encourage SMEs in the Philippines to engage in dialogue, learning from each other’s achievements and mistakes, in order to shape a common agenda and understanding of their responsibility towards society.

By integrating good manufacturing processes, accepted values in business governance and respect for consumers and stakeholders, SMEs can achieve the economic returns and also create the basis for a better quality of human life in this country. You can begin today. Join us!
