A Good Start
Amid the euphoria of a rising peso and a booming stock market, the country needs to take stock of what remains to be done to sustain momentum and ensure that the benefits of growth are shared by a wider base in society.
For us to reach our goal of greater scale of economic participation and prosperity, we must focus our energies on pursuing the necessary reforms and adjustments that will ensure that the market works and freedom of opportunity is upheld.
More businesses now formally recognize that profitability is not the sole measure of success. Today, businesses are taking stands on radically reducing their carbon footprint in order to stave off climate change; entrepreneurs are batting for locally-sourced and organically farmed produce or ethically tested products; while others invest in environmentally-friendly design and facilities.
An important step was taken two weeks ago with launch of the partnership that will make the resources of the Management Association of the Philippines available to the multi-sector Pinoy MicroEnterprise (PinoyME), a consortium aimed at reducing poverty through micro finance and support for entrepreneurship.
PinoyME's ambitious goal of reaching 5 million poor households and raising P5 billion for micro lending, capacity building, guarantee funding and support intervention over 5 years, if achieved, will certainly have a positive impact on the SME Community in the Philippines by opening new income opportunities, generating market demand and shaping self-reliant and enterprising communities.
A lot still needs to be done right and done well in the Philippines. And this is certainly a good start.
