The SME Advantage
What edge do Small and Medium Enterprises (SMEs) have that Big Business often lacks?
We agree with author Paul Dickinson that smaller businesses offer a more personable approach to transacting business by treating the customers as 'persons'. There is a distinct pleasure in doing business with a small scale enterprise. The fact still remains that small businesses can provide more personal and people oriented service.
Simple reality strikes: People trust people, not companies. The big shots in business know this and launch into marketing frenzies to create a more 'personable' image of the company. SMEs need not create this image because it is precisely what they are, businesses at a human scale.
Smaller businesses that do not have the global sprawling capabilities are often perceived as "ethnically pure". By sticking to best practices in marketing approach, SMEs are able to use this perception to great gain and leverage themselves as safe, responsible and responsive alternatives to big business.
The best advice from marketers to SMEs could well be "stick with what you are". If you own a company that's human in size and scale, let everyone know. By trying to look big, you only run the risk of fooling customers and failing next to corporate giants. So instead of masking your real operation size, be proud and make it your key advantage.
In business, size may not always matter. Knowing your company strength and working on your aces may just prove that being modest in size is not always daunting.
