Editor's Take
Working mothers know how difficult it is to balance work and family. After a busy day at work and a dozen mommy duties at home, there seems to be little time for one's self. So working mothers are increasingly turning to hobbies to relax and center themselves.
In addition, a growing number have realized that with careful attention, a modest investment and lots of enterprising spirit, backyard herb gardens, hobby crafts and home kitchens can be transformed from part-time sources of income into burgeoning, independent small and medium-sized businesses.
Former university instructor Flordz, a talented arts and crafts hobbyist, turned her interest into the successful company that gainfully employs dozens of women and provides a vast selection of exquisite decors that are a rage among Europe's well-heeled shoppers.
Cebu-based entrepreneur Rowena dabbled into the production of fashion accessories to keep herself pre-occupied while her husband was working abroad as an engineer. Today, her home-based business hobby is a full-scale factory that involves the whole family and produces top-of-the-line furnishings for the world market.
Hobbies are proven well-springs of ideas and launch pads for greater economic participation. By opening the doors to new opportunities, working women can move up in the world and carve new roles as successful entrepreneurs
