Editor's Take
Winning (Isn't) Everything
Among the cardinal principles we've learned over the years in the field of SME marketing-from professional services to farm fresh eggs-is that as marketers we are here for the customers.
At the risk of waxing philosophical, we'd like to share a few snippets from our conversations in the back office, over cups of coffee and between sips of tea:
* Our goal is to help customers buy what they need, and not the maximum that we can sell.
* If you're in the market for the purpose of winning/crushing the competition, you will be disappointed. Making customers happy and inspiring passionate about your company supersedes winning.
* Every niche begins small. You've got to focus on your niche in a very tangible way. We're in the business of selling the "total experience".
* It's not about size, my dear. SMEs can make mass customization work, create a market that offers many choices and contribute to a better quality of life.
And as my sidekick the Great Khan of Karamboola is oft to remind: Keep your eye on the bottom line, but don't forget that you also have to enjoy the ride.
What's your take on this? We want to hear from you! Click here and participate in the discussion.

The special award honors Binalot as it "best exemplifies the end-to-end service theme of UPS's Centennial Celebration". The award came with not only a $10,000 cash prize but the distinction that the next winner will have to wait another 100 years to win the same award.
The UPS contest is open to small business entities with 2006 business revenues between $250,000 to $10.0 million. For the special Centennial Prize, there was only one criterion: demonstrated commitment to and delivery of customer service that best exemplifies end-to-end service.
In a letter to Mr. Rommel Juan, Binalot president, Jonel Guittap of UPS-Delbros International Express Ltd. said that "what makes this recognition extra special for the Philippines is that you're the only Asian entry to win a prize in the contest and the first Philippine company to do so." Fact is, Binalot is not only the first Pinoy . . .
