Editor's Take

A Lesson from the Edge

After several weeks on the road for the SME.com.ph national tour, I chanced upon a book on taking risks and winning success. It's called "Lessons from the Edge' by Maryann Karinch, an icon in extreme sports circles.

In her book, Karinch relates how a team of open sea kayakers would, before heading out on an adventure, stand on the beach and ask the ocean to "Let us pass or give a sign."  They look for something like a gust of wind, a wave that breaks hard or a shark fin. Not all of them consider it a ritual or a prayer, although some of them do.  One of them calls it a "mind switch"-a personal moment that helps you prepare for the transition through the surf on to the acceptance of the open water and its rules.

We all need this "mind switch" moment. When the sales figures, the forecasts and personal issues are terrifyingly confused and conflicted in your head, it's probably time to put temporary distance from the job at hand, to draw a deep breath and clear your mind.

The market, with its dangers and ambiguities, is like the open ocean. We-as entrepreneurs and SME marketers-are like those kayakers seeking a route to the next, still invisible landfall. Unless we learn to face our fears, to trust our intuition and to channel our emotional energy into our pursuit, the challenge will always seem impossible.

And so, as I personally prepare for the next leg of my journey, join me in telling the ocean of initiative and enterprise: "Let us pass or give a sign."

RP urged to focus on multilateral trade despite poor performance

Despite the Philippines’ “anemic” performance after it joined the World Trade Organization (WTO), the country should still continue to focus on multilateral trade, according to a new study from the Center for Communication and Research Foundation.

The recommendations of the study “Analysis of Trade Liberalization and its Implications on the Agriculture and Fishery Sector of the Philippines” urged the country to not only focus on multilateral trade but also explore the feasibility of South-South trade, pursue a strong policy to integrate trade issues into the national agenda, and institutionalize a mechanism for Aid for Trade.
