From a Lowly Leaf
A homegrown Filipino fastfood chain made its mark in the global business scene by copping the once-in-a-lifetime Centennial Prize during the 2007 UPS Out-of-the-Box Small Business Contest sponsored by United Parcel Service.
The award and accompanying $10,000 cash prize goes to Binalot Fiesta Foods, fast-growing chain serving home-style meals, prepared with authentic native flavors and served with a dash of Pinoy humor.
The UPS contest is open to small business entities with 2006 business revenues between $250,000 and $10.0 million. For the special Centennial Prize, there was only one criterion: demonstrated commitment to and delivery of customer service that best exemplifies end-to-end service. No small feat indeed for a small and medium enterprise (SME) that started from the lowly banana leaf.
Binalot was chosen for its Dangal at Hanapbuhay Para sa Nayon (Dahon) Program, conceived as an end-to-end solution of sourcing its raw materials directly from farmer communities, specifically the banana leaves which it uses for wrapping its famed rice meals. This unique approach has allowed Binalot to succeed in combining its profit objectives with social objectives—supplying environmentally-friendly food packaging while providing livelihood and social opportunities in rural communities.
Being the first Asian entry to win the UPS competition prize and as the only Philippine company to enter the contest speaks volumes about the creativity, drive and competitiveness of Filipino Small and Medium Entrepreneurs.
Bravo Binalot! Bravo SMEs!
