SMEs find key partner in new packaging research center

SMALL-scale Filipino entrepreneurs will be equipped to be competitive—even globally—by the newly opened Packaging Research and Development Center (PRDC) in the Science department complex in Taguig, made possible by aid funds from the Japan International Cooperation Agency (Jica).

Science Secretary Estrella Alabastro said, “The center is geared towards enhancing the capabilities of our entrepreneurs, specifically those in the micro, small and medium enterprises. We know that packaging is a key component in making their products more competitive for the local and foreign markets.”

In an informal media briefing at the opening, Alabastro added, “We want the country’s microenterprises to develop their packages for the market, whether here and abroad. They can be more competitive if they can sell products with higher quality.”

Higher quality is possible because the center “can also help them in testing their product” because “physical, chemical, and other specialized testing...

The Risk of Becoming Road Kill

Globalization—no matter how hard certain quarters try to state otherwise—is real. The planet has been radically transformed in the past 15 years and the global market is dominant and demands new ways of doing things.

Unless we learn to evolve to suit this extremely competitive environment, SMEs just like countries are at risk of becoming road kill.

Last week, this space posed the question about the train rushing head on from the opposite end of the tunnel. As cautious optimists, we certainly advise SME owners and marketers to prepare to catch that train or end up crushed beneath its wheels.

SME Toolkit Road Show Update

From Pangasinan, SME Toolkit Went To Pampanga

Pampanga is popularly known for the businesses that produces sisig native dish and their delicious meat products like tocino and longganisa. Aside from these businesses producing unique delicacies, there are several small and medium enterprises in this province that SME.com.ph wanted to tap to introduce the advantages of the Internet in their businesses.

Around forty Small and Medium Enterprises, in the industries of Events Management, Fruit Nursery, Distribution, Schools, Manpower Agency, Rural Banks and Construction trooped to Batis Asul, Mc Arthur Highway in Pampanga Angeles City last Thursday August 23, 2007 to witness the SME Toolkit Road Show.

The success that the team received in Dagupan, Pangasinan is as successful as the road show in Angeles, Pampanga because the participants found the SME Toolkit very useful in their businesses and were highly interested to join SME.com.ph community.
