Editor's Take

In Memory of Anita Roddick

Anita Roddick, founder of ethical cosmetics firm Body Shop, a celebrated yet controversial figure and inspiration for many women passed away last week at age 64.

A campaigner for socially and ethically responsible business and “fair trade” for many years before it became fashionable to do so Anita Roddick inspired millions to the cause by bringing sustainable products to a mass market.

A pioneer who advocated that business could be a “force for good” Anita Roddick was not shy to describe her stores as “billboards” and used her fame to raise awareness for a range of causes, most famously for an end to the practice of animal testing.

Anita Roddick earned her fortune by hard work and creative insight. She had tried her hand running a picture-framing shop, a restaurant and a hotel before she came upon the idea of a store to sell a range of natural beauty products.

Her first store opened in 1976 in the village near Brighton and by the 1980s the Body Shop with its ethically-sourced products had become a business icon in Britain. She stepped down in 2003 as head of her firm and in July 2006, the Body Shop became part of the French cosmetic giant L’Oreal Group in 2006 but is run independently. It now has more than 2,100 stores in 55 countries trading in over 24 languages.

Anita Roddick devoted most of her working life to finding new ways of doing business and her latter years looking for ways for business to take a lead in making the world a better place. Let us honor her memory and others like her by helping to make it so.
