SME Special Report:

Legendary Calamba welcomes 21st SME Road Show!

The 21st stop of SME Toolkit Road Show was welcomed by the legendary city of Calamba and managed to accommodate 44 small and medium entrepreneurs (SMEs) at RSM Lutong-Bahay, Bacnotan’s pavilion on Thursday, June 26.

Calamba, the birthplace of the country’s national hero, José Rizal provided doors of SMEs’ future successes in the said area, which takes pride in being a tourist destination with hot spring resorts, most of which are located in Barangay Pansol, the Canlubang Golf and Country Club as well as an industrial center in the CALABARZON region.

Despite the sudden downpour when the event started, still it did not hinder Planters Development Bank (PDB) family along with SME.com.ph’s two technology partners, Globe Telecom and IBM Philippines to give their full support.

Roberto Buhain, Plantersbank’s executive vice president assured SMEs in the said cluster that banking with PDB is strong enough to back them up with their ventures.

Nothing is Small and Insignificant

While listening to Adonis C. Yap, the president of SME.com.ph delivered his marketing pitch at the Micro, Small and Medium Enterprises Development Week on Thursday, July 10 at SM Megatrade Hall 2 and 3—I could not help but marvel on how we made an impact in the MSME sector since our inception in 2000.

Over the years, from the time when the Internet was on its infancy here in the Philippines, Planters Development Bank and World Bank's International Finance Corporation have already given birth on something that would bring forth the Filipino SMEs on the world's center stage—via the creation of SME.com.ph.

As of today our roster includes some 330 Small and Medium Enterprises (SMEs) and is still growing with the progress of our nationwide SME Toolkit road show.

It is fulfilling to hear about the success of three SMEs whose ventures we helped launch on the internet: Goldnest Incorporated, Baliton's Sombrero Atbp., Enterprises and Spring Blessings.

These SMEs have one thing in common—their owners never thought of their companies as small-time. They did not fear competing with the giants. They even created the NEED for their products and services, which users online learned about it and patronized as well.

These SMEs took to heart the counsel of Thomas J. Peters and Robert H. Waterman, authors of In Search of Excellence: Lessons from America's Best Run Companies, who said: "No opportunity is too small, no forums too insignificant, no audience too junior." And they are making big thanks to the possibilities offered by the World Wide Web.

The Internet is indeed a great leveler. Nothing is small and insignificant. There is no 'David', but there is always a 'Goliath' even if a business is still starting. Imagination is the only limit.

To our team, congratulations for a job well done in continually empowering the Filipino SMEs!
