Have you ever asked yourself whether you’ve been living up to the vocation of entrepreneur, or simply been ‘self-employed’?
A friend from Cainta, Rizal shared anecdote to illustrate how asking the right questions helps release the genie of enterprise and set you on the road to creating new wealth and achieving self-mastery.
While visiting his favorite neighborhood eatery, he began to wonder how the small establishment managed to stay afloat while nearby beerhouses and karaoke bars were going belly up.
To his surprise, my friend discovered that the canteen owner was worried about the future of his business.
It turns out that new zoning ordinances had forced the bars to move elsewhere. And while it certainly was less rowdy along the strip, the transfer of the beer joints the number of customers walking in for meals dwindled.
Thinking aloud, my friend pitched some ideas to the canteen owner, like the suggestion to start a delivery service that would bring home-style meals to customers working or studying in the area.
The canteen owner’s face lit with excitement. As my friend mentioned the need to raise new capital and hire extra hands, the owner—who experiencing his Eureka moment—was already a step ahead and doing the math.
My friend has this admirable way of helping people think about risk and opportunity. With little effort, he succeeded in shifting the canteen owner from mere self-employment to the entrepreneurial worldview.
So, if you think your business prospects are headed for a serious slump, folding up might not be the best option. Step back. Take a look at your business through a fresh set of eyes. Don’t give up just yet.
