Editor's Take
Being an employer demands responsibility. The employer has been entrusted with team members, not to be lord and master but to treat them with benevolence and fairness.
An ancient sage advised “If one sets strict standards for oneself and makes allowances for others when making demands on them, one will stay clear of ill will.” Thus, it is enlightened self-interest to cultivate harmony with the people who work for you.
After all, is not the creative energy of people like a stream of water? Water is soft but it is most powerful. It yields to the shape of the cup, yet possesses the strength to wear away giant boulders. So the enlightened employer knows that in dealing with water, it is better to direct a stream in one direction than to block its path.
Rather than scream “No, that is not the way!” at the top of one’s voice and beat a stick against the walls of the shop, the sagely employer shapes the workplace and provides the pattern so things are done right and done well. By doing so his intervention in day-to-day things is least required and he has time on his hands to look after what is essential to the business.
The enlightened employer understands that no matter how hard he tries to keep them, employees—being free and conscious beings—will eventually depart in search of opportunity. Instead of playing emperor, the employer cultivates the relationship with the people and keeps them happy, so they share with him their best years. But he also instructs those who work for him in the ways of virtue. He teaches them to be devoted to principle but not inflexible in small matters.
The enlightened employer cultivates relationships that is lasting and worth reliving, especially when all have gone their separate ways. Because, when it is time for his employers to become entrepreneurs or leaders themselves, he knows they will reward his kindness with the same.
