Who says that Filipinos are 'hopeless' due to our athletes' failure to bring a single medal from the recently concluded Beijing Olympics?
When almost all our Philippine athletes resulted in dismal performances, there are five who emerged to make the nation proud. Or in marketing parlance, gave a boost to our brand.
Willie Wang bagged a gold medal in the recent 9th World Wushu Championship at the National Olympic Center in Beijing. Wang, a former silver medalist, pounded down Indonesian Heriyanto in the Nan Quan (Southern Fist) event, in which Japan's Matsura Arata finished third. Alongside Wang, Filipino martial artists Mary Jane Estimar, Jennifer Lagilag, Benjie Rivera and Marian Mariano contributed two silver and two bronze medals in other categories in the Olympic exhibition sport event.
Happily, our Wushu medalists get a P1.5 million purse from the grateful nation. And while that kitty isn't small change, the monetary reward is just the side dish. The knowledge of having bested the best athletes in the world is the greatest reward.
The Philippine Wushu champions point the way. Like them, Filipino SMEs can compete. And will compete to win.
