Lesson from the Hai Gui
Brian Wu, a researcher and a native of Shandong province in China, has something to say about the overconfidence entrepreneurs have for their own abilities and the risk-seeking nature that allows them to make great leaps.
Today’s Chinese entrepreneurs are greatly exposed to more cultures through trade contacts, international travel and the Internet. These, the Chinese claim, have contributed greatly to their business ideas.
Filipinos are just as innovative and creative. Attuned to Western culture due to our close ties with the Americans, there is no reason why Filipino entrepreneurs should not emerge as the strongest competitors of our Chinese or Southeast Asian counterparts.
Chinese entrepreneurs are returning to their homeland like Hai Guis (sea turtles) and applying what they learned overseas to create much impact in their economy.
If Chinese entrepreneurs used to be ‘constrained’ due to social, political and cultural issues, now, Chinese are becoming more ‘confident’.
Confidence is not an inborn trait. It can be learned. And confidence is what Filipino entrepreneurs—especially those in the diaspora—need to learn from the Chinese.

Ice Vodka Bar
Sometime in 2002, some vodka loving friends got together and decided to open a bar where they could enjoy their favorite vodkas, unavailable elsewhere, with friends. Thus, Ice Vodka Bar was born on October 18, 2002 with a literal “breaking of the ice” with Sarah Meier.
Besides featuring the most extensive collection of international vodkas (majority of which are available only at ICE), ICE boasts of other “firsts”: a strip of ice on the bar, to keep drinks eternally cold for those who sit there; chilled vodka served in shot glasses; vodka bottles resting in ice buckets made of pure ice; beer served in pewter mugs, to keep them cold infinitely.
The bar also features a long list of vodkatinis, vodka shooters and other vodka drinks, many of them original concoctions of the owners. Most popular among the vodkatinis are the Cosmopolitan and Absolute Ecstacy (an original concoction).
Aside from vodka, the carries all other popular liqueurs and spirits and features an interesting food menu that includes oysters, shrimps, pasta and thin crust pizzas, all superbly done.
With sleek interiors marked by abstract art on the walls and leather sofas, Ice Vodka Bar has proven to be a popular place for people who appreciate the good things in life!
