Technology innovation and the SMEs
Technology is a key growth driver for the small-medium enterprises (SMEs). The good news is that the Department of Science and Technology has the small enterprises technology upgrading program (SETUP) to answer to their call as far as beefing up technological capabilities is concerned.
SETUP enables SMEs to boost productivity, enhance product quality, reduce cost and waste management. So far, there is a positive response as more than 35,984 firms have availed of the assistance since it was launched in 2003 with only 1,307 clients. Among the 'graduates' of the program is the Camiguin-based VJANDEP Pastel. The pastel maker has now branched out to Cebu as part of their expansion.
The success of SETUP deserves commendation. But DOST needs more support and assistance as more and more SMEs and microenterprises need to improve their competitiveness to move up to the value chain. Democratizing access to technology is one way to improve SMEs steading and fight poverty as well.
