Beyond a Personal Income
While there is nothing wrong with aspiring to land a good job with a prestigious employer, young Filipinos might be better off during their college days preparing to become employers themselves.
Young people should consider the vocation of entrepreneurship, according to Plantersbank chairman Ambassador Jesus P. Tambunting. Having worked closely with SMEs for more than 35 years, Ambassador Tambunting says small business can be a fruitful undertaking.
Size is not so important. What matters most is for young people to select the type of business they would like to own and be passionate about. After selecting the business that they want, the next step is to put their hearts into ensuring the success of the enterprise.
Entrepreneurs, whether experienced or aspiring, cannot overemphasize the importance of setting measurable goals and drawing up plans. Not all challenges can be overcome by sheer enthusiasm, commitment and hard work. So entrepreneurs must be willing to ask for help and never stop asking questions how to get better.
The solid values and the wisdom passed on by one’s elders provide compass points for achieving your goals.
Enterprise guru Francis J. Kong says an entrepreneur’s competence, character and consistency are put to the test during adverse conditions. “SMEs should have a determined approach to improve, be better and provide more value to the customer,” he says.
Becoming an entrepreneur means making a difference in the lives of people. From an individual perspective, being an entrepreneur not only means earning a personal income but also creating new wealth and opening new social opportunities, thereby enriching society as well.
