Cutting the red tape

The International Finance Corp (IFC),the private sector arm of the World Bank, recently revealed that it is planning to invest $900 million until the fiscal year 2012. The objective of the assistance is to increase rural incomes and help in improving governance in the Philippines.

Aside from infrastructure, finance, agribusiness, mining and oil and gas, the investment also covers the ongoing project of the IFC with the League of Cities of the Philippines called Standardization for Business Registration and Permit Process Project. This aims to standardize all business registration and paymentprocesses. IFC provided an initial funding of P16 million to cover projects in Manila, Quezon City, Mandaluyong and Marikina.

For sure, the project is worth supporting. By providing all Philippine cities with a standard form, standard procedures, one-time assessment and one-time payment schemes, first-time entrepreneurs will have an easier time because this can cut down the procedures to only seven from the 15 steps and reduce the time of opening a business to a maximum of 10 days.

This is a good development for entrepreneurs specially the ones belonging to the SME sector. Moreover, this will energize the countryside as more rural folks will have more options to improve their lives.

A bustling city like Olongapo needs a quality lodging place for tourists and visitors. Since the 1980s, Arlene's Inn has provided that requirement of a quality and affordable lodging place specially visitors to the Subic Bay Metropolitan Area’s (SBMA) economic zone.

The transformation of the SBMA’s economic zone into a bustling hub of business activities has also led to the growth of Arlene’s Inn. After opening Arlene’s Inn, owner Arlene Ico says this was quickly followed by Arlene's 2 and 3. To accommodate the growing demand for more lodging requirements, affiliate City Inn was opened in 2008.
