SME in Focus

Reducing the carbon footprint

The Quezon city government raised the bar for earth-friendly urbanism with its recent initiative requiring private and government-owned buildings to allot a portion of their rooftops for “greening.”

Under the Green Roof Ordinance, Quezon City property owners should allocate 30 percent of their area for plants and trees. Further, the order states that “No real property tax shall be assessed against the value of the floor area. This exemption shall be available for ten years starting from the initial assessment.”

Such moves by local government units to motivate property owners and business are most welcome. Providing perks is only one step in the process. To make the initiatives effective it requires a closer public-private partnerships, involving the community and SMEs in mainstreaming pro-environmental measures.

SMEs comprise the bulk of the economy. Bringing the sector to spearhead sustainable/eco-friendly initiatives will certainly bring the “green movement” from being an alternative lifestyle into the mainstream of urban living.

Plantersbank planned Tier 2 offering rates PRS A plus

Plantersbank’s planned offering of P2.5 billion worth of Tier 2 notes received a best issue rating of “PRS A plus” from independent credit ratings agency Philippine Ratings Service Corporation (Philratings). The bank plans to beef up its Tier 2 capital as it intends to lend more aggressively to small and medium enterprises (SMEs) in 2010.

“The issuer rating assigned to Plantersbank reflects the following key consideration: well-defined strategy and established franchise in its defined market niche; strong and focused corporate leadership; sound funding profile; and positive revenue and earnings outlook,” the agency disclosed in a recent press statement.

Society Glass & Gabriel Builders Inc

Established in 2006, Society Glass & Gabriel Builders Inc was originally a single proprietorship unit carrying the name Society Glass & Aluminum engaged in glass and aluminum fabrications.

The year 2003 became a turning point for the business as owners Mr. Peter and Tessa Co expanded their business line by adding fabrication of steel works and the installation of roofing panels such as long span, color roof, stainless and pre-painted gutter. Since the former business name Society Glass & Aluminum does not cover the construction services, Mr and Mrs Co decided to rename the company as First Society Builders & General Contractor.

Being a single proprietorship, Society Glass & Aluminum & First Society Builders was consolidated as a corporation in November 2006 and renamed as Society Glass & Gabriel Builders Inc. Since then, the new corporation has been living up to its mission as a highly competitive organization providing the highest quality service and customer satisfaction.
