SME in Focus
Where is the SME agenda?
In this summer full of social malaise such as the El Nino, power shortage, the Supreme Court issue, midnight appointments, etc., nine presidential aspirants will charm, bamboozle or convince Filipinos that they are the perfect individual to be the country’s next leader.
As usual, they will harp on populist promises to rants about corruption and other social ills. In fact, there’s nothing new. And the sad fact is no single candidate so far has revealed his or her agenda on the role and importance of the country’s yet untapped middle-the Small and Medium Enterprise (SME) sector.
SMEs play an important role to the economy not only in the Philippines but also in the Association of Southeast Asian Nations bloc as it contributes from one quarter to as much as one-third of the gross domestic product. In the Philippines alone, nine out 10 businesses in the Philippines are SMEs employing about half of the labor force.
Perhaps the aspirants and their respective spin doctors will not find issues such as the absence of a pro-SME policy climate, lack of access to funds and the aversion of mainstream private banks to channel more credit and development services to entrepreneurs as unsexy and will not provide juicy sound bites on television. But these are real issues for entrepreneurs, their workers and the millions of family members dependent on SMEs for livelihood. If candidates are serious in creating more wealth for citizens, then empowerment of SMEs must be their priority, too!
