Beefing up the light rail system

The opening of the loop between the Metro Rail Transit (MRT) along Epifanio delos Santos Avenue (EDSA) and the Light Rail Transit (LRT) in Caloocan on March 15 this year is a welcome development to some 1.2 million commuters who can now travel faster and safer around the metropolis.

Light rail provides a solution to car saturation, particularly in large, dense, old cities like Metro Manila. Only rail can provide fast, convenient service at reasonable cost when city centers are clogged with traffic. Light rail also improves land values along their routes and concentrate commercial development and compact housing around stations. In this way rail systems encourage more even development, with commercial activity and jobs-including SMEs-clustering around stations, as visibly noted along the MRT line.

Indeed, the introduction of light rail along the country's major thoroughfares is a great help to millions of commuters who have to bear the hellish and anarchic situation on the country's road networks. However, there is still a lot to be done by the government to give Juan dela Cruz a comfortable ride using the trains. For instance, the government must immediately beef up the rolling stock as more and more commuters are expected to take up loop going to and from both ends of EDSA. Further, it should develop a more efficient way of selling tickets to avoid overcrowding.
