Political will and the inconvenient truth
In his recent Manila lecture, former US Vice President and Nobel Peace Prize winner Albert Arnold Gore Jr stressed the power of political will as a “renewable source” in the pursuit of a green agenda. This makes sense as political leaders have a key role to ensure the laws are enforced and implemented to ensure the protection of the environment. Furthermore, civil society organizations can help build the people’s awareness high on environmental issues.
Gore said it right that population growth has a big impact on the environment and resources. Being the 12th most populous nation in the planet and a Third World country at the same time, the Philippines must pursue a sound population management program anchored on women empowerment, comprehensive education on all aspects of reproductive health management and a strong political will from the government to ensure a sustainable future.
Indeed, the impact of global climate change is for real. But just like Gore, we have to be optimistic and active at the same time in our own capacity to rejuvenate the Earth. It is our obligation regardless of creed, color and social status. We have only one planet to live in.
