In Monsoon Country
It is heartening to know that the Philippines is poised for growth this year. The National Economic and Development Authority and the Asian Development Bank are optimistic on the country’s economic performance this year. However, we strongly feel that the prospects of long-term growth are threatened.
This space has for the past three years urged policymakers and the private sector to explore and develop alternatives that will make up for future shortfalls in the country’s energy and water supply.
Indeed, the impact of global climate change is for real. But just like Gore, we have to be optimistic and active at the same time in our own capacity to rejuvenate the Earth. It is our obligation regardless of creed, color and social status. We have only one planet to live in.
Growing woes over the reliability of existing power and water infrastructure bodes ill for entrepreneur confidence. The news of Manila’s impoverished busting open water mains because they’ve had no water for a week, while certain neighborhoods continue to profusely water their lawns and ornamental gardens, should set off alarm bells.
A pledge of good governance and transparency is a terrific confidence building measure but not enough to drive the economy forward. For as long as woes over the reliability of existing infrastructure go unaddressed, optimism will likely wane. And wane very fast.
