Railway is the way in traveling
Traffic, smog and urban sprawl pose serious problems for our cities. But they also present opportunities to built better urban settings.
Among the solutions this space has been supportive of upgrading public transport to street-level light rail or trams at best (and bus-ways at minimum). Thus, Science and Technology Secretary Mario Montejo’s announcement that the county will pursue the development of a locally-made monorail system is welcome news.
Light rail has proven the more attractive alternative to car-based urban systems. Routes are simple to understand. The environment is more pleasant. Light rail also improves land values along routes. And importantly, creates a pedestrian- or bike-friendly city by encouraging commercial, residential and job clustering around stations.
Decision-makers and private developers in Cebu, Davao and other emerging urban hubs should learn from the negative experience of Metro Manila. The sooner plans for street-level light rail systems are included in long-term urban blueprint, the better.
