Retiring the king of the road

Since the end of World War II, the jeepney has been a vital cog in the country’s public transport sector. The child born of necessity–the jeepney—has also been a source of cultural pride. Hailed as a symbol of Filipino ingenuity, the jeepney has provided the artistic canvas for many a would-be muralist of the Botong school and provided an honest source of living for generations of Filipinos.

But the march of time reveals that the jeepney system has overstayed its welcome. In large metropolises, together with the two–stroke motorized trike, the public jeepney is a nuisance. The free–for–all, carefree, poorly organized jeepney system is a major cause of the monstrous gridlock, parking congestion and pollution in key cities.

There is no doubt that replacing this 20th century relic will not be easy. But planners and decision makers must begin the task of rationalizing the public transport sector.

The public requires an efficient, reliable, safe, environment-friendly and affordable mass transit system–light rail, street level, riverine–if our metropolises expect to become sources of growth and dynamism in the future.

Tentay Food Sauces

Putting patis in the global market

In 1949, an aspiring entrepreneur-housewife from Navotas named Ruperta D. Javier thought of concocting fish sauce (patis) and fish paste (bagoong) from the fish hauls in that former suburban town.

Realizing that she has developed a delicious taste for her sauces, Javier used her nickname Tentay as the product brand. As they say, the rest is history as Tentay has become a byword not only in the local but foreign market as well. Right now, Tentay Food Sauces Inc (TFSI) is present in 11 countries spanning four continents.
