Population Management and National Survival
Population management is a key issue that cannot be sidelined in the new national development agenda.
In 2007, the country’s gross domestic product grew 7 percent but poverty incidence remained high. As the 12th most populous country on the planet, the Human Development Index of this country is comparable to Bangladesh, a country half the size of the Philippines but with twice the population.
In early 2008, according to the Social Weather Station, 7.1 million Filipino families described themselves as poor in terms of food consumption. A further study by the Asian Development Bank revealed 48.7% of families with 7 children were living in poverty. It doesn’t take a rocket scientist to guess that more mouths to feed in an economically–shaky world mean a worsening the poverty situation.
The U.P. Population Institute and Alan Guttmacher Institute said “ignorance of family planning methods leads to 6–in–10 Filipino women having an unintended pregnancy at some point in their lives.” This translates to a total of 1.43 million unintended pregnancies yearly. Three new Filipinos are born every minute, majority of these births, if the studies are to be believed, are unintended, mistimed or, sadly, unwanted.
Former president Fidel Ramos has described the country’s population policy as ‘flip-flopping’. This space agrees. It is high time for rational choices, for scientific and well–planned solutions to the country’s growing population and to correct the increasing imbalance in the distribution of wealth and resources.
