Overcoming Risks, Unleashing Potential
Small Medium Enterprises (SMEs) are the linchpin of the Philippine economy. Together with micro enterprises, the sector includes nine out of 10 businesses in the country, accounting for almost 70 percent employment, and contributing close to a third of the country’s gross domestic product. However, there’s much to be desired when it comes to providing financial access to these businesses.
Citing a study by the International Finance Corporation, a high-rank Bangko Sentral ng Pilipinas official noted that the level of funding for Philippine SMEs which ranges between 12 and 21 percent is below the 30 percent benchmark in emerging markets like India. This means SMEs in the Philippines are dependent on internally generated funds like loans from family members and informal lenders, the latter source often charging extortionate rates and posing an obstacle to wealth generation.
The high transactional costs in securing loans specifically for loan sizes between P150, 000 to P5 million as well as the absence of uniform accounting systems among entrepreneurs are the pose challenges to the bankability of the sector. It is not surprising why formal creditors remain reliant on physical collateral, mainly real property, to minimize risks.
Coupled with incentives to encourage bankers to increasingly channel funds to SMEs, the Bangko Sentral should work closely with the private sector to implement a uniform credit scoring system so SMEs can have improved access to already existing development funds. On their part, entrepreneurs need to brush up on their accounting and work with their bankers to adopt standard business practices and ensure transparency of financial records.
Overcoming well-entrenched mindsets won’t be easy. But we are hopeful it will not take too long before this country can fully unleash the growth potential in our SMEs.

Web directory is a growth driver.
Taking off from the previous article, we will continue to write about the advantages and benefits of being enlisted in an online directory such as SME.com.ph. Actually, there is a small difference between a search engine and an online directory. “Directories classify the sites in categories and present it to the user, making it easier for the user to find the most relevant sites,” said Raghhav C Sammrat in his article “Web Directory Advantages and Benefits.”
Link building is the most important advantage of web directory listing. By enlisting in more quality directories, you will have chances for a higher ranking in the search engine result. Just remember that search engines provide less quality traffic.

The Infants & Toddlers Discovery Center (ITDC)
The Infants & Toddlers Discovery Center (ITDC) was founded by Teodoro A. Dominguez Jr. who is the concurrent President and Dr. Salome P. Dominguez as the Directress.
During the later part of 1991, the school opened its’ doors to the community of BF Homes Parañaque. From the onset, the school believed that Quality Early Childhood Care and Development Programs should not only be made available for toddlers up to the higher ages, but should start as early as 6 months where the learning curve is at it’s most critical stage.
This belief inspired the school to develop programs with the aim of enhancing the child’s unique self, develop his sense of discovery, and create a world of play thus allowing concepts and skills to be absorbed in a conducive and pleasant manner. In order to make real this promising vision, the school embarked in developing programs for children as young as 6 months old up to six year old toddlers. Each age level was provided with an individualized developmentally appropriate curriculum. No two curriculums are alike, each developed with the concern for the Developmental Age of the Child.
Since 1991, the school served the community with only five educational levels. (Infants Class up to Nursery Class). Fueled by the clamor of our parents to complete the pre-elementary level, it was on November of 2002 that the school willingly constructed a new two story facility that now houses our Kinder and Preparatory Levels.

SME Power Quote
“If you work hard, you must be willing to work hard for some objective, and you must have an interest in what you are doing. That’s what you call passion. But passion doesn’t mean you just think about doing something. You have to do it. So that's hard work.” – Washington Sycip
