Ratings war, scoops and relevance
The media is labeled as the Fourth Estate for nothing. It exerts a very big influence in the social fabric of the citizens and the country. In a Bond movie, the British super spy quipped that media organizations can topple governments in a single headline.
Recent developments have indicated that the behavior of Philippine media needs to change to become a more relevant and in depth. Because of the ratings war, the general direction of the covering news and events is anchored on sensationalism and the scoop mentality. It is not surprising these days for local networks to highlight stories related to show business, crimes and accidents as banner stories for the day. This results in developing the non-formation of a critical and analytical mind among the citizenry.
Instead of scoops, news organization must provide more depth to their stories so they can enlighten the people about the burning issues of the day. Instead of telling the people on the burning issues of the day such as the impact of climate change on the wheat and rice harvest abroad on the small and medium enterprises and consumers, the networks were busy highlighting the people about the botox treatment of a teenage singing sensation.

SME Power Quote
“There is no such thing as overnight success or easy money. If you fail, do not be discouraged; try again. When you do well, do not change your ways. Success is not just good luck: it is a combination of hard work, good credit standing, opportunity, readiness and timing. Success will not last if you do not take care of it.” – Henry Sy, SM Investments Corp |
